From the Motorcycle Sportsmen’s Chief Technical Officer, Stephen Robson:
“Alert! Riders, please check your bike’s brake system.
“We had Southern Downs Round 4 at the weekend at Queensland Raceway, and the front disk rotors below were found to have cracks radiating from the cross-drilled holes.
It’s easier to see them with a torch and the cracks are a result of repeated heating up and cooling during braking.
It’s more prominent in cross-drilled rotors with less material due to being drilled – the cracks start as stressed points, and they then crack and can explode.
This has happened on bikes racing at Qld Raceway and at a racetrack in Tasmania
I will be checking brake rotors at each round of Sporties events and also at QEMSC events where possible. Bluing of the disk rotor is a good indicator that the rotor has been subject to heat that could have caused cracking.”
