Many sports clubs face challenges in recruiting and retaining volunteers due to a range of factors from time constraints to lack of recognition/appreciation, skill gaps, inadequate mentoring, right down to toxic club culture.
Unfortunately, there’s no silver bullet, but to help address these issues, clubs can offer:
• A Dedicated Volunteer Coordinator to connect people with jobs
• Flexible opportunities – Offer opportunities with varying time commitments, like one-off events or shorter shifts. Vary the days / times volunteers can engage.
• Improved communication – Use newsletters, social media, club meetings and other channels to keep volunteers informed and engaged.
• Provide training and support – Provide training to help volunteers feel confident and prepared. Have a specific training day/s.
• Recognition and Appreciation – Acknowledge volunteers’ contributions through thank you notes, public recognition, awards, volunteer apparel, reduced membership fees etc.
• Provide tangible rewards – Social Events to foster a sense of community and connection among volunteers.
• Address Toxic Environments – Creating a positive and inclusive culture is crucial for attracting and retaining volunteers.
When it comes to attracting new volunteers and specific skills, it’s possible to leverage people and networks using personal invitations and targeted advertising. Consider using local community groups outside your Club like Rural Firies, Mens Shed, SES etc).
It’s worth remembering that positive first impressions are important. A well-structured induction program can make new volunteers feel welcome and valued, as will ensuring volunteers are provided with the proper equipment required to do their task.
Remember too, that once we start paying volunteers – they are no longer volunteers but contractors or employees that come with several other obligations to your Club that can increase administration and liability on the Club, or erode the profitability of an event.
As I said at the start, there is no Silver Bullet, but hopefully something here in this list will help. All the best with your next event!
Until next time, Ride Race Enjoy!!
