Ah well, it was always going to be a tough one in a year where Queenslanders excelled at the Olympics *and* won Wimbledon, and for the first time ever the Queensland Sport Award was split between two winners. Congratulations Emma McKeon and Ashleigh Barty.

Volunteer in focus - Shari Coker![]()
“Ravenshoe MCC is where you’ll find me, 24 hours a day, pretty much. Or if I’m not there my mind is!”![]()
When it comes to making sure her kids have a motocross track to ride and race at, this week’s volunteer in focus, Shari Coker, certainly doesn’t lack any commitment.![]()
“I’m actually a Clerk, Steward and a Race Secretary - just depends what’s needed on the day,” says Shari. “We only do a couple of race days a year so most of the time you’ll find me as a practice supervisor. But all the roles, first aid too and sometimes canteen lady and track prepper!![]()
“We’re reasonably large – around 150 members this year – and we’re a very beginner friendly club, with a track that’s more wide open and not so many jumps. We’re also quite rural and sort of out in the middle of nowhere, so we offer a lot of camping and a very family-friendly weekend away,” she continues.![]()
To flog the old cliché, the Far North certainly seems to have something in the water. Despite a limited population, it’s a region of the state that has contributed the likes of Jackson Richardson, Mitch Evans, Todd Waters and the Ward brothers to Queensland’s MX gene pool.![]()
And as far as Ravenshoe goes, one unique ingredient is the track.![]()
“It’s a red, filthy, staining hard pack, that everybody calls “the dreaded” Ravenshoe red dirt,” says Shari. “Once it’s in your white plastics or your white gear, it’s all over! It’s terrible when it’s wet, so we can’t water if it gets dusty on race day. It usually takes my husband about two weeks to prep with getting the water into it.![]()
“He does all the ripping and rotary hoeing and whatnot and then I do all the watering for the two weeks until he gets home from the mines.” ![]()
Like most of the sport’s volunteers, Shari was initially drawn to help because in 2017 her boys wanted to ride every weekend, but Ravenshoe generally wasn’t open because of lack of officials.![]()
“So that kind of pushed me. I thought I’d just be a practice supervisor, but before we knew it, 2018 had rolled around and we ended up on the committee and after that, the rest is history!” ![]()
“Ken Goleby and myself are the main officials now, and we’ve worked together the whole time and we’ve got a great relationship where we know how it goes and we seem to get along really well. Recently my mother’s become a race secretary, so that meant we were able to have a whole team that was sort of tied to Ravenshoe.![]()
“I think it’s the kids, I love the memories that are being made out at the track. I like to think that I’m in some way part of it for those families and kids. So, the smiley little faces, and the good, honest, dirty, fun times probably keep me there!”![]()
“I’m also a level 2 clerk and steward for road racing. I did some work with the FNQ road racing club back in 2019 and while I loved the relaxed atmosphere (and lack of mud and dust) that road racing offered, my heart definitely lies with motocross and the unbeatable sounds and smells of dirt bikes ripping up the track.”
