Davey takes inaugural Women's Dirt Track Championships

Ashleigh Davey
Last weekend (4th and 5th August) saw in excess of 100 riders converge on the Woodstock Circuit in Townsville for the 2007 Queensland Junior and Senior Dirt Track Championships.

This year saw the introduction of a Senior Women’s Championship class with $300 prize money up for grabs. The class consisted of Queensland’s fastest Dirt Track women riders including Megan Doyle, Melissa Emmi, Samantha Van Eerde, Phoebe Grajczonek, Ashleigh Davey and Melissa Ashford.

Racing was hotly contested over the entire weekend with all the women having tight tussles for the lead through the tight, fast S-bends at the Townsville track. There was no room for error as the women swapped leads constantly over the weekend, each one staking their claim for the new Title.

At the completion of racing on the Saturday, Ashleigh Davey (Rising Sun Honda) was leading the class by 15 points from the remainder of the field who were separated by only a few points.

Sunday started with Ashleigh having it all her own way in the first race with a hole shot on the freshly watered track and holding the lead for the entire race comfortably.

In the second race Megan Doyle took the all-important hole shot. The race was the most exciting of the championships with the girls swapping the lead 6 times throughout the race. In the end it was Davey who slipped through the slightest gap showing how determined she was to secure the championship. Doyle took second place, with Phoebe Grajczonek charging through the pack in the second race to take the third spot.

The last race began with a straight-line speed race between all the women as each got a flying start. It was Davey however who made the decision to brake the latest and in so doing gaining a slight advantage going into the first tight turn, she never looked headed from this point taking her third win of the weekend.

“I have had such a fantastic time at the Championships. It feels great to say I’m the first ever Women’s Queensland Dirt Track Champion. I can’t speak highly enough of my fellow female racers this weekend, I certainly had to work for my win' said Davey after taking the victory.

"My motocross background definitely gave me an advantage with the right hand turns and also when the track got rough".

"Thanks must also go to the Townsville club for their organisation and hard work put into the event" she finished.

Davey also thanked her sponsors - Rising Sun Honda, No Fear Racewear, Dragon, DirtGirl Clothing, Motul Oils and RK Chains.”

Many of the girls have also been competing in their own class at the North Queensland Dirt Track Series Championships. With one round to go in the Series its Honda’s Ashleigh Davey leading from Megan Doyle (Yamaha) and another Honda rider, Melissa Emmi in third.
