dominates Queensland Championships

Factory KTM star Angus Reekie (pictured) showed
great form at Round 3 of the Queensland Supermoto Extreme
Championship, winning every race he entered – in two
separate classes!
Reekie grabbed pole in both
the unlimited capacity S1 division and the Premier 450cc
S2 competition, and went on to take all four race wins in
each class.
The event which was held at the Ipswich
Kart Track on Sunday the 12th of August, saw racers competing
on a special bitumen and dirt course, complete with table
top and jumps. Race
organisers The Motorcycle Sportsmen of Queensland packed
plenty of action into the schedule, with six classes of racing
throughout the day plus the All Powers Challenge, open to
anyone quick enough to qualify.
The weather was unusually hot for
this time of year, and Reekie pointed out that the heat
was murderous on tyres. He
explained that the track is tight and hard to pass and move
through traffic on, but that he was happy with his progress.
“Now
that we have the setup right, things are going really well.
The competition is close, so I want to get as many points
as possible in the State Championship.”
Reekie
credits much of his superb performance to KTM Australia,
Tony Hatton / Elf fuels, Racetech Suspension and his father. He
went on to add: “We really like coming up to
these events, as The Sportsmen always put on top race meetings
and the staff and officials are great.”
Reekie did not enter the
All Powers Challenge, but that did not detract from the awesome
racing this category always produces. The first qualifying
heat was won by Linden Magee (Brisbane Motorcycles Honda
CRF450), whilst the second heat was taken out by the factory
Aprillia Racing SXV550 of Joshua McFarlane. Both Magee
(S2) and McFarlane (S1) finished second behind Reekie in
their regular classes, so a show-down between these two was
virtually guaranteed in the Challenge Final.
Magee got the better start
and held off McFarlane during the hectic first lap. By the
end of the second lap he had managed to pull a small gap,
and he fought hard to hold this gap for the bulk of the race.
By
lap 10, just when it appeared all the racers had settled
into their final positions, Magee somehow snatched defeat
from the proverbial jaws of victory by crashing out of the
lead. He did
manage to remount quickly, but not before McFarlane had slipped
past. With only two laps to go Magee had to settle
for second, giving McFarlane an unexpected win.
Earlier
in the day Magee had mentioned that he was struggling with
his tyres, finding the track slippery with his current setup.
Third place in the Challenge went to Factory Husky rider
Graham Cheney. Cheney also commented on the tyre issue,
saying that when the Ipswich Kart track is warm the grip
is good, but that when the track temperature is low so is
the level of grip. He also made note of the fact that
most of the main contenders in the National Australian Supermoto
Championship were up racing in this event, ensuring a top
level competition.
Queenslander Jake Horne made a clean
sweep of the Junior class, taking the win in all five races
on the Pro Kawasaki KX250F. He felt very confident
and comfortable on this track, and was happy to increase
his Championship points lead.
Keil Robinson put the Pro Yamaha YZ450
in first position in the popular Novice category, winning
all but one race.
The Veterans saw a very close, hard
fought 3-way battle between Peter Cox (Springwood Suzuki
RMZ450), Michael Ricketts (KTM 570), and Mick Hams (GP
Tech Suspension 570 Husky).
Cox
ultimately took victory with wins in race 2 and race 4. “They
should put the minimum age up, all these other guys are too
young” he quipped.
Cox also said that the
competition was very fast in the Vets class, and he needed
to get as many points as possible to catch up in the Championship.
Ricketts finished second with a win in race one, and Hams
grabbed third, winning race 3 in fine style, with a great
wheelie over the line (despite Ricketts being right on his
rear wheel). Hams
said he had lots of fun, and although he was tired and suffered
arm pump early on he was able to push Cox all the way in
the final race, to the point that Cox was physically sick
by race end.
Ex British and Italian National Quad
Champion Matthew Coulter was dominant in the Quads competition,
taking all four wins on the 450 Honda. He was very
happy with the track, saying it had a great dirt section,
and was very tight and physical but a lot of fun.
Full round results will
be availble from The
Motorcycle Sportsmen website soon.
Footnote: The
Australian Supermoto community would like to wish Matthew
Kuhne a speedy recovery. A recent
accident sustained during testing left Matty with serious
injuries, and he is currently undergoing treatment in hospital.

Tough
round leaves Cini in 3rd place in AMA
Supermoto Series
An up and down third round
(23 & 24 June) of the AMA Supermoto Series at Miller Motorsports
Park in Tooele, Utah has seen LA Fuel Husqvarna Team rider
- Adam Cini consolidate himself in 3rd position in the 250
Lites class in the AMA Supermoto Series.
Cini, the 2006 S1 Australian
Supermoto champion, qualified 3rd fastest at Tooele, putting
himself on the front row in the 250 Lites class where he
finished in 2nd position in the heat races.
In the
first main event race Cini
made a solid start, quickly
slotting into 3rd place. A crash, however, put
him back to 5th making him work his way back for a
great battle for 3rd place. Unfortunately, time ran out,
leaving him in 4th.
After the race Cini had
this to say:
"The last track I raced
at (Salt Lake City, Utah) was very
long for a Supermoto Track with lap times up around 1 minute
50 seconds. The
road section was very fast which is good for me because I
seem to like
those style tracks at the moment."
"The different
thing about this weekend's Miller Motorsports Track was that
it had two dirt sections, one on each end of the road course. Both
dirt sections were very jump orientated which I really enjoyed
due to my Supercross back ground" he continued.
Cini will compete with the
San Diego based LA Fuel Husqvarna Team for the entire AMA
Supermoto Series, and with seven rounds still to go he is
nicely positioned to make a series challenge for the title.
"I’m really
enjoying my time here. Everything about the motorcycle
industry here in the US is just so big. The LA Fuel Husqvarna
Team is working really hard for me, and I feel as though
I am also working extremely hard to get the results" said
Cini.
Cini has scheduled a trip
back home to Australia in September to visit his friends,
family and dogs, and then its back to the State to finish
the Series.
You can keep up-to-date
with Adam's form in the AMA Supermoto Series at www.amasupermoto.com
The
fourth round of the Series is scheduled to take place at
the Waterford Hills Road Course, Detroit on 7 and 8 July.

Queensland
Supermoto Championships after 2
Round
Two of the Motorcycle Sportsmen Queensland Supermoto State
Championship was held on Sunday the 22nd of April at Ipswich
Kart Track. This
sport is enjoying a rapid growth, in both competitors and
spectators, and is attracting interest from many other motorcycle
disciplines.
Angus
Reekie took top honours in the Motul S2 class for 450cc
machines, with his second place in race one and wins in
the remaining three races putting him well in front of
second placed Linden Magee (pictured).
Magee won
the first race, but fell to fourth in race two, before
climbing back to second position in races three and four. Third
overall went to Graham Cheney, with two third place finishes
and two fourths.
The
Open Capacity Gas Strut Marine S1 division was also won
by a very busy Angus Reekie, this time with a perfect four
wins from four starts. A very consistent Ross
Taylor picked up second overall from his four second place
finishes, whilst the familiar Bridgestone Tyre Guy – John
Newton – grabbed the final podium position with two
thirds, one fourth and one seventh.
Restricted
to bikes under 250cc, the Australian Site Management S3
Competition was a whitewash by Joel Whitaker, who took
victory in all four races. To add to the Whitaker
stranglehold on S3, Luke Whitaker finished second overall
with a third in the first race, and three second place finishes
in the following races. Andrew Leak took third overall,
beating Luke Whitaker home in the first race to take second,
before finishing third in the final three races.
The
Cox Haulage Novice class was won convincingly by Peter
Hull, with four victories to his credit. Anthony Armstrong’s
four second place finishes netted him second overall, and
third for the day went to Chris Keegan, with three thirds
and one fourth place finish.
A
great battle for the Veterans competition developed between
Michael Ricketts and Peter Cox, with the pair finishing
the day on equal points. Ricketts took the round victory
by winning the all important final race. He also won
race two, and finished second in race one and race three. Cox
grabbed victory in those two races and finished second in
race two and the final race. Gordon Milne claimed third
overall with his four third place finishes.
Matt
Coulter’s four straight wins in the Quad Bike
class earned him a clear round win. Adrian Wise finished
second in each race for second overall, whilst third for
the day went to Lance Wise with four third place race finishes.
Reece
McGill took a very narrow one point victory in the five
race Junior Competition. He won two races, finished
second in one and third in the remaining two. Right
behind him was Junior Road Racer Jake Horne, with one race
win, three seconds and one third giving him second overall. Another
Junior Road Racer, Jacob Morgan, claimed the final podium
spot with three fourths and two thirds.
In the All Powers Challenge race (open to any competitor
on any machine), Angus Reekie again proved too strong for
the competition and claimed the win, with Graham Cheney in
second, and Nick Brain finishing third.
The next race meeting for Moto in Queensland will be the
Supermoto Extreme State Championship Round Three on Sunday,
12th August, also at Ipswich Kart Track.
