We
Need Your Help!
The newly formed Redlands
Motorcycle Club urgently needs your help. Redland City Council
has been approached and has been investigating the possibility
of providing a site for the development of a new motorcycle
facility. Initially
this facility will cater for Motocross.
This is now
an urgent matter as so many tracks and venues have been closed
or are threatened with closure. Regardless of your
location, a motocross facility in Redlands will enhance our
chosen sport and provide a safe alternative for riders of
all ages.
Please forward an
email or fax a message to the Redland City Council on the
details listed below expressing your own views on the need
for a motorcycle facility in Redlands. We
need them to know how many people would support such a facility.
Our
negotiations to date have been positive and would be greatly
enhanced by positive feedback to the Redland City Council.
We want to project a responsible community that will use
such a facility to provide a safe environment for dirt bike
enthusiasts.
Regards,
Gary Marks

MQ
Clubs 'benefit' from Gambling Fund
Three of Motorcycling Queensland's affiliated Clubs have
been announced as recipients of grant funding through the
Queensland Government's Gambling Community Benefit Fund.
The Gambling Community Benefit Fund provides one-off grants
of up to $30,000 to Queensland based not-for-profit community
groups and organisations.
The 3 MQ affiliated Club
who were announced amongst a group 500 community organisations
as being successful in the March 2008 quarter were; the Kingaroy
and District Motorcycle Club, the Sunshine Coast Motorcycle
Club and the Queensland Vintage Motocross Club.

application.
"I was absolutely blown away when I was contacted to
confirm that our grant was successful" said Thomson.
"The purchase of this tractor is, without a doubt going
to make the job of volunteers at the track so much easier.
It may even bring a few more volunteers out of the wood work" he
said, tongue planted firmly in cheek.
"I'm going to need to chase
more funding now to build a suitable house for it" he
finished.
The Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club was similarly approved
for $30,000 to upgrade the Green Park facilities, including
the erection of boundary fences and a shed slab, whilst the
Queensland Vintage Motocross Club was approved for $20,000

Queensland
Trail Bike Conference
Story by: Scott
Bishop
A range of Queensland Government representatives and industry
figureheads recently gathered at Green Park, Conondale for
part of the national Tracks and Trails Conference to discuss
the issues of dirt bike recreation in the South East region
of Queensland.
The Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation hosted the
conference at Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast. Dave Batt,
convener of the Trail Bike Workshop brought together representatives
from government departments such as recreation and forestry
as well as a range of land management people to openly discuss
what has become a major problem in the South-East Queensland
area.
Some startling statistics were announced
at the beginning of the day, which underlined just how
serious the issue is. 225,000 people have ridden a dirt
bike at least once in the past 12 months in the SEQ area.
That figure represents 11% of the region’s population. There are 14 legal venues
to ride a dirt bike, which are likely to be reduced to seven
within three years due to urban expansion and the population
boom of the region. The state government wants and needs
answers fast.
Local motocross clubs are under most
threat in the region with suburbia all over the Reedy Creek,
Stanmore, Tivoli, and Toowoomba clubs as well as several
legal riding spots under scrutiny by forestry and park
rangers.
THE DAY:
The government people were taken to the Conondale facility
and shown that a dirt bike park can operate for 32 years
in a constructive and active manner in the local community
and not end up a barren wasteland with over use. They viewed
the venue and got a complete run down of how it operates
and what the benefits were to the community. They were also
impressed with the condition of the place and how well the
venue has been maintained.
For many of the people, it was also the first time they
had witnessed a dirt bike in action and what a responsible
rider wears and how they act. Noise tests were also conducted
and the fact that a WR450 wide open in 4th gear made 88db,
while the generator driving the air-conditioning unit was
belting out a 77db roar. That certainly shocked a few of
them.
THE IMAGE:
Many entered the day with the clichéd
image of a dirt bike ride and a ramshackle organization
that represents us. This was soon proven to be a huge misconception
with plenty of the office types showing more than a glancing
interest in dirt bikes and some very keen to have a go
themselves.
The Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club’s
secretary, Peter Bell and MQ General Manager, Lindsay Granger
briefed the participants on how the club and the sport
operate in Queensland.
They were talked through various models
of dirt bikes and their intended use and also the safety
gear worn. Demos of each bike’s performance also
impressed with many not expecting the wide range of skills
that a modern bike and rider has.
DID ANYTHING CHANGE?
The Queensland government recognises this is a serious issue
and needs addressing immediately. Some of the initiatives
to come from the day are that the state government will now
work more closely with Motorcycling Queensland in finding
and securing land for future venues.
They will also look at the planning
processes that may have stopped prospective landowners
from opening ride parks in the past. It was also asked
why a portion of road bike licensing registration isn’t
put into sourcing land and the representatives agreed that
this needs to be looked into.
Next on the hit list was education and responsible riding.
Within the next 12 months, every road bike licence holder
will receive with their rego renewal, an information brochure
which will outline what the government is doing and provide
riders with a list of places where they can ride their dirt
bikes. School visits are also planned in hot spot areas to
target the younger riders and educate them on the responsibility
of owning a dirt bike.
OPINIONS:
It may not have solved the problems entirely, but everyone
came away from the day with a positive attitude, better
knowledge and an agreement that things needed to be moved
on quickly.
“I think it worked out well and the dirt bike community
gathered here today represented themselves well. The first
hand information and knowledge provided to the state government
as well as the experience they gained themselves can only
assist them in understanding the wants and needs of the dirt
bike riding community,’ says conference leader Dave
Batt. Let’s hope in six or 12 months time we can meet
again, talk about the program we have in place and what future
developments will be,” he added.
Motorcycling Queensland’s Lindsay Granger echoed those
sentiments, “MQ must play an active role in working
with the state government in securing and assisting in dirt
bike recreation. I think today gave everybody a better understanding
of the issues faced by dirt bike riders and hopefully it
will get the ball rolling in the right direction for responsible
off road riding and management”.
One man that took a huge interest in the day was Ray Buchanan,
the man behind several organized trail rides in the Northern
New South Wales and South East Queensland area.
“The more legal riding spots we have the healthier
the industry is and the less damage we leave on often used
areas. The representatives here today seemed very enthusiastic
about forging a relationship with us and that has got to
be a good thing. And as the statistics they presented earlier
in the day suggested, it’s not a moment too soon.”

Mind
Games - Being in the zone
Story
by: Matt Ahlberg (Master of Sport & Exercise
Psychologist)
Mental Notes Consulting

The primary aim for many sport psychologists
is to work with athletes to improve their performances.
This work can take many shapes and forms but when all is
said and done what we are trying to achieve is to get athletes “In
the Zone” as frequently as possible.
Most riders will have had experiences
when everything on the bike seems to come so easily. Decisions
seem simpler, techniques feels flawless, and the rider
feels as though they can do anything with their bike.
It
has several different names (e.g., flow, optimal performance
state) but what we are talking about is “Being in the Zone”. At
Mental Notes Consulting we call this your ‘A’ Game
and it’s what we work with our athletes to achieve.
This feeling or state is one where
the rider’s mind
and body are working together at their peak so that performance
feels natural, easy and as close to perfection as it can
come. The rider is completely absorbed in the “process” or
the ride and all other distractions seem non-existent. The
rider’s focus is purely on the task at hand and nothing
seems to faze them.
Unfortunately, riders experience this state all too infrequently
and most have no idea how they achieved it in the first place.
Whilst it is true that you will not always experience this
state it is also true that there are things that riders can
do to prepare themselves and greatly increase the chances
of being in the zone.
Below are some things for all riders to think about in terms
of increasing their chances of being in the zone.
Achieve optimal activation levels. Feeling relaxed
but excited, at ease and looking forward to enjoying the
different aspects of a ride can greatly increase the chances
of you getting into the zone.
Motivation to perform well. Clearly you have to
really want to be there if you are going to get into the
zone. Being motivated by high quality performance as opposed
to winning can create the focus on task that you need to
perform well.
Focusing on the present. Thoughts about the future
or the past tend to reduce the chances of being in the zone.
Keeping a narrow focus on the here and now can help you to
become absorbed in the ride.
Pre-competitive and competitive plans. Having a
clear understanding of what you are about to do and how you
will do it (e.g., a race plan) can increase confidence and
focus your thoughts on the ride and the ride alone.
Train hard. Very simply if your body feels ready
to ride well then you are more likely to feel relaxed, confident
and ready to enjoy the ride.
Accepting thoughts and feelings. All athletes experience
a myriad of thoughts and feelings. Sometimes they are comfortable
with them and sometimes they are not. It is important for
riders to accept these different thoughts and feelings as
natural and for them to understand that regardless of the
thought or feeling that they can still work towards achieving
their performance goals.
The ‘A’ Game or The Zone
is a place where a rider will perform at their peak. As
a result it is something that athletes, coaches, and sport
psychologists will work towards achieving. There are certainly
things that athletes can do to give themselves every chance
of being in the zone and that is what we must consistently
work towards.
The great athletes are those who have
done everything they possibly can to mentally and physically
prepare for a ride. Because when they’re in the zone
they are flawless but when they are not in the zone they
are still performing extremely well.
Mental Notes Consulting has offices in Brisbane and on both
the Sunshine and Gold Coasts. We have a number of consultants
that can help you achieve your sporting and performance goals.

and arguably most acclaimed in Australia, is set to kick
off at Greenlands, Stanthorpe, on February 23 to 24.
The 18-ride series was a huge hit last year, attracting
as many as 1,000 riders, and landing a nation first award,
the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation Award for Event
Excellence for an Outdoor Activity.
Winning the award was a huge feat, especially considering
nominations were open to any club, organization or enterprise
of any kind of sport.
The honor was proudly accepted by
one of the master-minds of the series, Dalby Moto’s
Craig Hartley, and commended by Motorcycling Queensland
General Manager Lindsay Granger.
Mr Granger said Motorcycling Queensland was proud of the
role the rides play within motorcycle sport and recreation
in Queensland.
“We intend to maintain the support which we provide
to keep the series happening,” he said.
Mr Hartley said the Dalby Moto Trail
Rides offered a “full
weekend of fun” for the whole family.
“Greenlands is a beautiful spot and the riding is
breathtaking,” he said.
“The two main loops will go back up into the high
country as they did last year… they will open mid-Saturday
morning, and provide everything from creeks, open trails,
tight forest trails and good hills.”
Mr Hartley said he was excited that
Yamaha, Honda, KTM, Ron Angel Accessories (Kenda and Rock
Oil) and Motorcycling Queensland, who have all been “tremendous supporters
of the series”, were back on board for 2008.
“It’s also fantastic that the biggest motorcycle
magazine in the country, ADB, will again be a media partner
this year,” he said.
The Greenlands Trail Ride offers free
camping, “views
to remember”, hot showers and toilet facilities, licensed
bar and canteen, Saturday evening entertainment, Sunday lunch
included in entry and “plenty of great memories”.
There will also be a Pee Wee and upgraded Novice track for
the little ones.
Pre-paid nominations are accepted until Wednesday, February
13. Forms can be obtained from www.dalbymoto.com.au. Entry
is also available on the day. For more information please
call Peter (0408 711 061) or Allen (07 4683 6343 after hours).

everyone had put in.
“It’s such a
great boost for not only the club but for the sport too,” he

Australian PGA is just brilliant.”

Dreams
come true for 9 year old - Mitchell Warner
Story by: Scott Bishop
The smile on little Mitchell Warner’s face said it
all.
After six months of treatment and 20 hits
of radiation to treat a malignant muscle tumor on his eye,
Mitchell was in remission and granted a wish by the good
people of the Starlight Foundations Make–A–Wish
Program. Mitchell wanted a motorcycle and to learn how to
ride it.
The wish became a reality
when Mitchell was surprised to turn up at the Reedy Creek
Motocross Track on the Gold Coast late last year with a brand
new KLX110 and a set of Fox gear waiting for him.
Not only that, Level 2 Queensland coach
Chris Urquhart - www.urkymx.com cleared
his day to help get the budding Chad Reed started, and Motorcycling
Queensland had come to the party for the cost of an annual
Recreational Licence.
I can’t believe I get to keep the bike and gear. I
can’t wait to ride it more and be able to do big jumps
like Chris," Mitchell said excitedly after his first
few laps on the bike with Chris.
"We really appreciate what the Starlight Foundation Make-A-Wish Program
and everyone involved has done for Mitchell and our family," says his
father Rod.
After the day spent with Chris our lawn
will never be the same. As soon as we got home he began tearing
it up and despite a few crashes, he dusted himself off and
jumped right back on. It has been an amazing day," he
finishes.
And Urquhart was more then impressed with how fast the little
tacker had picked up the skills to ride a motorcycle.
"Within two hours he was able to stand up, change gears and ride complete
laps of the Reedy Creek circuit. That is pretty amazing seeing he had only
ridden a push bike before and the Reedy Creek track can be pretty daunting
for first timers."
Mitchell’s story began in late 2006 when he noticed
a lump on his eyelid. Within six weeks it had grown to the
size of his eyeball and it was surgically removed. It was
then doctors diagnosed Mitchell with having Embroyonel Rhabdomysarcoma.
Tests immediately begun to see if the tumor had spread through
his body and then came six months of weekly chemotherapy
and 20 days of radiation. His treatment ended in May 2007.
Mitchell is now in remission but will to have on going MRI’s
and chest X-rays for the next five years. He is regaining
strength and stamina every day and his hobbies of playing
X-Box, karate and In-line hockey have been replaced with
a dirt bike habit.
The
Starlight Foundation Make-A-Wish Program makes
dreams come true for little guys like Mitchell everyday.
The Warner Family can’t thank them enough for the day
they have given Mitchell and their work continues with thousands
of other just like him.
