Southern Downs: Round Three Recap

Author: Media/Monday, June 15, 2015/Categories: State News

With Round 3 of the 2015 Pirelli Southern Downs Road Race Series now complete (June 7-8)  we are more than halfway through the season, and what a great season 2015 has been so far.

The weather was cold but the sun shone and Round Three will go down as one of the best Winter rounds the club has hosted at Morgan Park Raceway. The success of the meeting is thanks to solid entry numbers and big smiles on all those that raced, officiated or spectated.

The first of the Queensland Championship classes has run its course, with the Moto3/125GP and 250/300 Production class winners crowned. The Superbikes and Supersport categories have run their first Queensland Championship round and the leaders can now look forward to Round Five for the title deciding round. It’s always was nice to have the MRRDA visit Morgan Park Raceway, and it was great to see the young riders showing what they can do.

Motorcycle Sportsmen President Paul Dawson said it was great to see rider numbers into the triple digits.

“Cold temperatures meant the pace was slow on track at first but Winter in Warwick is a glorious time once the sun comes up,” Paul says.

“Once again our Clubracer class had great support and it’s good to see so many new competitors taking the plunge and getting into racing. Our Clubracer initiative that offers Free entry for first time racers is an incentive that helps to bring people into racing which helps to improve the quality and lessen some of the costs associated with racing.

“We always look forward to seeing the MRRDA kids, the MRRDA is an important scheme and we hope that it continues once Paul Edwards, the instigator and driving force behind the program, retires at the end of this year.

“Thanks to our event sponsor Pirelli for the Pirelli round award which awards the winner $200 to spend on products from the comprehensive Link International product line-up. Dririder Accessories also provided a raffle prize of $750 worth of riding gear to one lucky participant, and Sporties donated a Free Next Race… so even if you don’t win on the track, you might be lucky off it!

"Congratulations to our newest Queensland Road Race champions for 2015, now we look forward to Round Four where the F3 and sidecar classes fight it out for state championship honours.”

Supermoto was the only class that saw the series lead change hands, with Adam Griffin taking advantage of Bryce Kennedy’s absence, claiming the round win and the top spot going in to round four.

Although Troy Gunther was not able to take the round win he did increase his lead in the championship, the rest of the class leaders were able to increase their points lead in their respective classes by taking the round win.

Queensland Road Race Champions Crowned

    Moto3/125GP - #17 Brian Houghton
    250/300 Production - #8 Simon Dickson

Brian Houghton has been impressive this year in the Moto3/125GP category. Keeping the young guns honest, he entered the round in second place. Round One winner Callum was not entered, so while Brian’s work was reduced he still pushed to the maximum to off hard chargers Locky Taylor and Tayla Relph, and won all four races at round two, earning outright victory in the series.

Simon Dickson could not be stopped this year, a perfect campaign taking eight wins in the eight races, topped off by lowering the lap record in the final race of the series.

Queensland Road Race Championships Round 1 Winners

    Superbike - #97 Joshua Cuming
    Supersport - #30 Kane Burns

Round three of the Pirelli Southern Downs Road Race Series was the first round for the Superbike (Formula 1) and Supersport (Formula 2) classes. Their championship concludes at Round five of the Pirelli Southern Downs Road Race Series. Both classes were dominated on the scoreboard with Joshua Cuming taking all four race wins in Superbike and Kane Burns showing he too was a force to be reckoned with with a 100% strike rate in the Supersport class. While Joshua was a step ahead of his competitors, Kane only had one race where his winning margin was over half a second, in the other three he was hounded all the way to the line by Troy Guenther.

The event ran smoothly thanks to an amazing crew of volunteers and flag marshals. All the riders wish to thank them for weathering the cold wind and ensuring the race meeting was a great success.

The Motorcycle Sportsmen of Queensland look forward to running Round Four over the weekend of August 1 -2. Round four will feature a parade lap for spectators to take part in, so come on out and get on the track to see what the riders see.
