Toowoomba’s Sarah Guthrie had a great start to defending her title by taking the win at the opening round of the 2015 Yamaha Queensland Motocross Championships at Six Mile Raceway Rockhampton over the weekend of April 3 – 5.
She nudged out Dysart’s Nicole Kenny and Brisbane’s Tamara Gray for the top spot.
On Saturday, 20-year-old Guthrie grabbed the lead early in in the race and rode a solid and unchallenged race finishing ahead of multiple former champion Tamara Gray and local rider Nicole Kenny.
Sunday was to host another two motos, however Mother Nature was not in agreeance, dumping down a deluge of rain in a thunder storm early Sunday morning. The event was shortened to one round of racing to start in the afternoon to give the deep sandy circuit a chance to dry.
After Saturday’s results, the weekend was shaping up to be a battle of the two strokes. In Sunday’s race it was Nicole Kenny aboard her YZ250 that grabbed the early lead and rode free to the chequers. 250SX mounted Guthrie gave chase, but had a small crash and was too far behind to catch Kenny. Meanwhile Tamara Gray fought hard to get through the pack after a bad start on her 125SX and managed to climb back in to third position for the moto.
The class was well supported at the first round with eighteen entries coming from across the state.
The point’s battle has now been left tight amongst the top three heading to the final round of the championships at Tivoli on the 27/28 of June.
