The weather gods smiled on the third running of the Motorcycle Sportsmen of Qld’s female only trackday, Ladies Day at the Raceway, the forecast was ominous, and the chatter was of rain, but the predicted thunderstorms stayed away until everyone had left the track.
Ladies Day at the Raceway is an annual event held at Morgan Park Raceway near Warwick, approximately 2 hours west of Brisbane; Ladies Day at the Raceway is about getting more women on track, it’s about improving and building two-wheeled confidence and about getting women to ride their motorcycles on track in a friendly and supportive environment.
Ladies Day at the Raceway has all the hallmarks of a normal Sporties trackday, transponder timing ensures each participant is in the correct group for their skill level, a low track density means there’s less bikes on track and plenty of room to have fun, club coaches ride as travelling marshals, and are on hand in the pits and on track to provide advice and guidance. In addition to this, Ladies Day at the Raceway has rider mentors made up from the ranks of female club racers, these rapid ladies are easily distinguished on track and in the pits with their custom made Ladies Day vests worn over their leathers, rider mentors are picked to ensure a selection of ages and bike capacities and are there to provide advice, answer any questions but most importantly to be relatable.
More than 60 women took to the track in 3 graded groups to enjoy the perfect conditions, more than half of whom were first timers to riding on track!
The scene in the pits at Ladies Day seemed unremarkable at first, it looked just like any other trackday with excited chatter, kids running around, bikes on stands with tyre warmers fitted in-between stints on track, but when you look closer, you see that it’s the ladies in leathers and the partners are looking after the kids and taking off tyre warmers.
Each Ladies Day participant received a custom-made Ladies Day at the Raceway Neck tube scarf from event sponsor Stitchsmith (www.Stitchsmith.com.au), there were raffle prizes from Ricondi (www.Ricondi.com.au) and Miss Moto (www.missmoto.com.au) who were on hand supporting the event. Airoh Helmets (www.airoh.com), Five Advanced Gloves (www.five-gloves.com), Kabuto helmets (www.kabuto.com.au) and Flying Solo Gear Company (www.flyingsologear.com) also provided prizes for the raffle along with AMX Stores (www.amxsuperstores.com.au), Motorcycles R Us (www.motorcyclesrus.com.au) and Motorcycle Rider’s Warehouse (www.riderswarehouse.com.au).
