Western Districts Trials Club member Joel Nelson took a punt on a drying track to win his first Queensland Trials Championship at Rockatoo, near Esk, 60 kilometres northwest of Ipswich, yesterday.
While Saturday winner, TRS rider Bradley Bryant carried a narrow, three-point lead overnight, Nelson turned the tables on Sunday, electing to wait for damp conditions to dry.
It was a strategy which ultimately saw the Beta rider claim the second day by 8 points, and the title by five.
Tom Wager was third on a Sherco, with Evergreen Richard Kent fourth on an EM Sport, and Kyle Rolands fifth on another Sherco.
In Women’s competition, Sarah Chivers also overtook the Saturday leader to win the Queensland plate on the Sunday. In this case it was her fellow Central Queenslander and good friend Nicole Casey, while third place went to Helena Coleman.
