Organised vintage Motocross on an interstate level started at Dargle, New South Wales in 1991. Mark Firkin, backed by the Penrith MCC was the prime mover, and Australasian Dirt Bike Magazine was the naming sponsor.
2016 marks the 25th anniversary of this beginning, and the Brisbane Motorcycle Club (BMCC) ,who were in it from that first meeting, are hosting the National Classic Motocross Championship at Harrisville (near Ipswich) on June 18 - 19. This year's naming sponsor is ‘Maico at Chippys’, which is fitting as Chippy rode at Dargle (see photo)
Pioneers who rode in that Dargle event and who also compete this year will receive a commemorative plaque honoring their achievement. There are already seven such veterans committed to the 25th Anniversary.
This will be the fourth Nationals hosted by the Brisbane MCC, two at Cherabah Resort (Warwick) in 1994 and 2000, and in 2012 at Queensland Moto Park.
The 2013 Classic Nationals nearly didn't happen, but Motorcycling Queensland, together with a small band of local riders pulled together at the last minute and seven weeks after taking it on, the gate dropped at Queensland Moto Park for the first race of a packed program.
